Auditions for "The Unexpected Guest" by Agatha Christie

Updated: Feb 11, 2020

Auditions will consist of cold readings of selected scenes from the script.

Lost in the fog, a stranger seeks refuge in a nearby house only to find a man shot dead and his wife standing over him with a smoking gun. But the woman’s dazed confession is anything but convincing, and the unexpected guest decides to help. Remarkably, the police clues point to a man who died two years previously, but as the ghosts of a past wrong begin to emerge, a tangled web of lies reveals family secrets and chilling motives, where the real murderer

turns out to be the greatest mystery of all.

Suggested audience: Adults and Teens

Cautions: None

Cast of Characters:

6 men, 3 women

(Note: Richard Warwick is listed as a character in the script, but is only a dead body through Act 1, Scene 1)

Laura Warwick: An attractive woman of about 30

Michael Starkwedder: An active, tough-looking man of about 35, not very polished, but a shrewd thinker as well as being a man of action

Miss Bennett (Benny): A woman of fifty, grey-haired, alert, brisk, showing marks of an ex-hospital nurse

Jan Warwick: A young man of about 19 having a strange, rather innocent fawn-like face with eyes which can be rather quick and sly upon occasion, but a sweetness in manner

Mrs. Warwick: A tall, commanding old lady, although leaning on a stick, she is quite alert and is obviously a strong personality

Henry Angell: A man of about 48, he has a correct manner, but a shifty eye

Sergeant Cadwallader: A young Welsh man with a soft, musical voice

Inspector Thomas: A middle-aged man, rather poker-faced and dryly sarcastic

Julian Ferrar: A handsome man of about 36 with a soldierly aspect

This will be a traditionally performed reader's theater with music stands. British accents will be required as this will be an Agatha Christie period piece. The play takes place in Richard Warwick's study in South Wales near the Bristol Channel.
